The Mallory Project

"Find something you're passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it." – Julia Child

everything hurts

One time, I told my physical therapist that everything hurt. He chuckled politely and asked “Everything? Even the soles of your feet? The back of your ankles?”

I had to agree with him at that time. No, not everything hurt. It just seemed that way, because of the overwhelming sense of pain around my body.

But today; today I can say without a doubt, that everything hurts. I was laying in bed, too uncomfortable to fall asleep, mentally running a “body inventory”. I started this exercise as a way to help me fall asleep: progressive muscle relaxation. (This is done by laying down in a dark place in a comfortable position, and starting with the top of your head, you slowly move down your body, relaxing each group of muscles.) But instead of relaxing, I found myself thinking “this part of my body hurts” and I found myself thinking that over and over again. My temples, my ears, the area behind my eyes, my nose, my jaw, my neck, my shoulders…down and down and down it went until I landed on the bottom of my feet.

Now, not everything hurts the same amount. My legs and feet are sore, like I’ve been doing a lot of time on the treadmill or riding a bike. If I don’t move them and don’t think about them, I can barely feel anything. There are only several spots that have stinging pain. That would be my left arm and my back. I’m trying to take precautions in those areas (today I’m wearing a back brace and a wrist splint) and last night I iced both areas until they were practically numb. I’m trying to type more with my right hand than my left (although I don’t want to overdo it.) But I’ve only been at work 2 hours and already the pinky on my left hand is tingling. (Carpul tunnel?)

My biggest issue is that this fibro flare has been going on for three weeks, and it just seems to get worse everyday. I’ve cried myself to sleep several times in the past week because the pain is just so bad. And painkillers (anything short of morphine) don’t help. I even tried Xanax, to see if it would feel better if I calmed down a little. I did fall asleep faster than night, but the pain was still alive and well. It’s like a hydra – chop off one head, and three more grow in it’s place.

New Blog To Follow

Everybody, check out my mom’s new blog at teachersjourneyofheart.wordpress.com. She’s writing about her diagnosis of heart failure, as well as being a teacher (currently without a classroom). She’s a pretty awesome writer, so you won’t regret it. (Though she just started, so she doesn’t have a lot to browse yet. She will soon, though, and it’ll be good!)

Divergent Book Review

This was a fast, fun and intense YA read. It reminded me a little bit of the Hunger Games (comparable dystopian setting, similar protagonists) but I didn’t connect as deeply with Tris as I did with Katniss. It is possible I was unconsciously comparing the two, which would definitely color my feelings a little (but I didn’t do it on purpose, I swear!)

I do have to say though, that the lack of a love triangle was very refreshing. The romance storyline was organic and enjoyable.

I didn’t want to put it down during the last 100 pages. I could not wait to find out what would happen next. And it brought a few tears to my eyes.

Now I can’t wait to dig into Insurgent (book 2), and I’m looking forward to the movie (I think it comes out in March 2014) with Shailene Woodley as Tris.

Also, I spent most of the book wondering which faction I would be in. About half way through, I settled on Erudite…though now I’m not so sure…

For those of you who like the look of my cupcakes and want to try them, visit my Etsy shop, where you can custom order cupcakes!

I also sell crocheted and knitted crafts, and every week (sometimes every other week) I’ll offer up something new!

Most of my handmade crafts are available as custom orders, and some are premade. All the cupcakes and cookies are custom orders.

Premade goods can be sent within two business days, custom orders are generally sent within 5 business days.

Ten percent of all my proceeds will go to the American Heart Association, in honor of my mom, who has heart failure (though she’s getting a little better every day!)

Thanks! (And tell your friends!)

Cake decorating

I just want to share what I made in my second cake decorating class.

It’s a regular yellow cake (Betty Crocker) and homemade buttercream frosting.
